Also home to the WNBA’s Dallas Wings, College Park Center in downtown Arlington provides an intimate setting to watch DFW’s “other” Mavericks play college hoops. A steady winner under current head coach Scott Cross, UTA played in the 2008 NCAA Tournament and advanced deep in the 2017 NIT.
A boisterous UTA student section helps makes these games spirited affairs.
And the Arlington restaurant scene in and around the arena is worth checking out, with must-visits like Babe’s Chicken and Dinner House, Beirut Rock Café (Mediterranean), longtime favorite J. Gilligan’s Bar and Grill and Old School Pizza & Suds.
Moody has hosted Mustang basketball for over five decades and appeared in Talk Radio, a 1988 Oliver Stone-directed film shot locally. Renovated in 2013, Moody is virtually a new building, with luxury suites and a top-notch in-game atmosphere. The SMU men are almost unbeatable at home since the renovation, and if you check out a game here, try to sit near “The Mob,” the raucous student spirit section who sits behind both teams’ benches.
“The Mob,” a group which former President George W. Bush is an honorary member of, is known for their costumes like a crab and a hot dog and their creative taunts aimed at opposing players, coaches and even officials.
No trip to The Hilltop is complete without a visit to a local favorites like Bubba’s (fried chicken), Burger House, Kuby’s Sausage House (German) or Peggy Sue BBQ.
Built in 1961 as Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, this venue got new life as Schollmaier Arena in 2015. And as the Horned Frogs have become relevant and nationally-ranked under recent coaching hire Jamie Dixon, who played in Fort Worth, the growing crowds have helped give TCU a huge home-court advantage.
A giant cardboard cut-out of Dixon, which includes moving arms, is a great prop used by members of the Horned Frog Band, who sit behind the south goal, to distract opposing players while shooting free throws. The TCU band is a big part of the great atmosphere at Schollmaier.
Among the spots near TCU’s campus to grab a bite or some liquid refreshment before or after a game are the original Fuzzy’s Taco Shop on Berry Street, Pizza Snob and Salsa Limon Universidad (Mexican).
