After twelve years in business, the tours still remain one of the city’s best kept secrets—but that doesn’t mean you should expect availability if you walk up. These tours, which take place only six times a year, offer a variety of behind-the-scenes excursions through the North Texas Horse Country. It’s where you can get up close and personal with the beautiful horses that graze some of the legendary ranches in and around Denton. Dana Lodge of the Denton Convention & Visitors Bureau believes that the tours are a once in a lifetime opportunity.
“There’s literally no other place on the world that offers such a concentration of horse farms—both in terms of breed and what the farm specializes in,” she says. “Whether you love horses or have never seen one, you’ll love the experience.”
The tours began in 2005, when Denton partnered with the cities of Fort Worth and Pilot Point to bring the beautiful horse country closer to DFW residents and visitors. Some of the most famous ranches in Texas—including the renowned Valor Ranch—are part of this experience, and visitors have a variety of options to choose from. Self-guided tours, horseback riding and stagecoach rides are all possible, with groups up to as many as 50 are welcome. Lodge believes this versatility is key to the visitors’ experience—and its popularity.
“You get to completely customize your tour to see the horse country however you want to,” she says. “No matter which tour you choose, it’s one of the most beautiful things you’ll ever see.”
The monthly tours often sell out quickly, so gallop here as soon as you can to reserve your spot because you won’t want to miss out on the beauty and possibilities of the horse country. Horse Country tours are available the first Saturday of every October, November, December, March, April and May.
