But everything changed last month when I stumbled upon Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie (specifically Lynn Creek Park) on her calm, blue shores. Brace yourself DFW visitors: Sand really does exist here! If you’re visiting the DFW region and are looking for an escape from the city life, look no further than this gorgeous lake in Grand Prairie, Texas. For those unfamiliar with the area, Grand Prairie is right in between Dallas and Fort Worth, so it’s a great location if you’re visiting either city.
WATER ACTIVITIES AT JOE POOL LAKE
From personal experience, there is plenty to do at Joe Pool Lake. My favorite activities include renting a canoe from Lynn Creek Marina, having a picnic on the beach at Lynn Creek Park, venturing into the refreshing, cool water at the lake, and pairing a hot basket of fries with a cold drink at the Oasis Restaurant on the marina.
Rentals for boats, canoes and kayaks are so easy at the marina. You can book in person or reserve online before you go to ensure availability. When you arrive, you just sign a waiver, then off you go! The marina employees will set you up with life vests and paddles, so the only things you need to bring are water, sunscreen and snacks. Fun fact for first-timers: The canoes have a middle section where you can store your food to make sure it doesn’t get wet!).
When my husband and I went, we did a two-hour canoe rental for $30. It was so peaceful and relaxing being out on the lake together. It’s amazing how nature can help you refocus and destress.
Afterward, we took the short 10-minute drive to the beach where rest assured, there are plenty of restrooms nearby. Be prepared for the $10 per vehicle entrance fee to the state park (unless you are a Grand Prairie resident). Keep in mind that you can go hiking and fishing here as well, so it’s easy to get your money’s worth!
At the end of the day, we headed back to the docks for an early dinner at the Oasis at Joe Pool Lake, a restaurant that looks out over the marina with stunning views. If you find yourself in need of a beach day next time you’re in Dallas-Fort Worth, I’d definitely recommend any or all of these activities!
If your plans at Joe Pool Lake get rained out, don’t worry! I know that Texas weather can be finicky, but fortunately, Grand Prairie has another great option for enjoying the waves — Epic Waters Indoor Waterpark. No matter the weather, you can step inside here and it’ll feel like a balmy summer day. Here you’ll find thrilling waterslides, Texas’ longest indoor lazy river, an aquatic fort for the kiddos and even an arcade!
