This Saturday we rose early, just like cowboys on the trail, looking for a hearty breakfast. We’ve heard other locals talking about OldWest Café in Grapevine, who told us if we didn’t get there early, we’d have to wait.
We saunter in to OldWest right after 7 AM, right behind a sweet older couple, both wearing Wrangler. While the jumbo-sized portions are certainly worth the wait, we were hungry, and glad to be sat at one of the last available tables in the joint.
We look at the menu, and are immediately overwhelmed by choice. Almost everything comes with one or two “breakfast sides” in addition to the already large portions described on the laminate, off-white menus. Cheeky entrée names like “Gunsmith” and “Stagecoach” catch my eye — and absolutely everything sounds decadent. My partner (or should I say — pardner) Taylor is a fan of simplicity, so he orders the Rancher, a sampler that comes with two breakfast sides of his choosing. He goes for sourdough toast and a side of strawberries and bananas.
I usually go for something sweet, so I order the Strawberry Cheesecake Stuffed French Toast — which also comes with 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon or sausage, and a breakfast side. I’m thinking that maybe I need to add a notch on my belt in anticipation, but as always, my eyes are bigger than my stomach, and I sojourn ahead, excited for my Texas-sized breakfast.
Our food arrives quickly — and the size of our orders shocks us both. Taylor’s “simple” breakfast is spread out onto two diner plates, and my stacked french toast rises an easy six inches off the table, piled high with strawberries and powdered sugar. Our sweet waitress struggles to find places on the table for syrup and Cholula, but quickly sorts us out. It’s clear she’s done this before. We say our prayers (we’re in the Bible belt, after all) and tuck in.
Neither of us comes close to being able to finish our meals, but we can’t take to-go boxes, because after this, we’re heading to explore Main Street, then hit up some of Grapevine’s best wineries for some tastings. I’m sure we’ll be thankful for our big breakfast and full bellies then, as if we weren’t already.
