The GOLD National Championships, which include the 2018 Girls’ 16-Under and 18-Under (16U and 18U) teams are two of the most prominent tournaments in Junior Olympic Championship Play. This will be the first time since 1995 the tournament has returned to Texas, so you know it’s a big deal, and the city has been patiently (and expertly) planning it all out. Admission to the games are free to the public, so don’t miss your chance to watch some of the best teams in the country swinging for the fences in Plano this July!
ON THE FIELD
If you’ve never had the chance to experience GOLD Nationals or know much about the tournament or the teams, take it from me: It’s a first-class event with some of the top and up-and-coming softball players across the country. Even if you’re not really into the sport, it’s still a great time to watch young athletes compete at such a high level.
The 16U GOLD and 18U GOLD games will primarily be played at Heritage Yards in Plano, which has nine fields and features grandstand seating on their premier championship field so fans can watch in comfort (though come prepared with sunscreen and water because you know these Texas summertime temperatures get almost as heated as the games!). Luckily fans and players can enjoy covered pavilions, multiple concessions locations and a central operations building to make the experience even more enjoyable. Fans should be sure to check out this handy map of Heritage Yards.
USA Softball’s Texas Commissioner, David Devine, said the City of Plano has embraced the organization from day one. “This is a first-class event and it will be an honor to host it in Plano at their exceptional parks.”
OFF THE FIELD
While I’m not knocking concession food, I can vouch that I loved going out to eat for a greasy burger after a big game, so check out these hamburger joints near the ballpark. It’s surely a great way to celebrate a victory or drown your team’s sorrows in comfort food.
